Abiodun urges Ogun police to remain neutral ahead of 2027 elections

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has urged the Nigeria Police to remain professional, impartial and fair ahead of the 2027 general elections. Abiodun made the call in Abeokuta while opening a two-day workshop on election security, the law, stakeholders and the media. The event was organised by the state police command in partnership with the state government, the Development Communication Research Centre and others.
The governor, represented by his Special Adviser on Security, AIG Olusola Subair, said the police had an important role in protecting democracy and supporting free, fair, credible and violence-free elections. He asked officers to act in accordance with the Constitution and electoral laws, saying their conduct and reports could influence public confidence in the electoral process. He also urged them not to become catalysts for violence.
Representatives of the Army, Federal Road Safety Corps, Amotekun Corps, Vigilante, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and So-Safe Corps attended the workshop. Ogun State Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni said election security was a shared responsibility. He urged political parties, candidates and supporters to reject violence, intimidation, thuggery, property destruction and attacks on electoral officials or facilities.
Ojajuni also called on election officials to work professionally, observers to remain within their mandates and the media to provide accurate, balanced and responsible information. He said the command would remain non-partisan and committed to protecting citizens’ constitutional right to vote. Prof Fassy Yusuf of the University of Lagos said the success of the election would depend on cooperation among security agencies, electoral authorities, civil society organisations, communities and the media.
He said security agencies should protect the electoral process with the people rather than against them. The workshop was intended to strengthen the ability of security agencies and other participants to manage election-related risks before, during and after the polls.
