DRI seizes cocaine concealed in chocolate tubes at Hyderabad airport

India’s Directorate of Revenue Intelligence says it has seized nearly five kilograms of cocaine from a passenger arriving at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad from Doha, Qatar. The DRI Hyderabad Zonal Unit said officers intercepted the passenger on September 29 after receiving specific intelligence. They examined the passenger’s cabin baggage and found seven tubes labelled as containing assorted filled dark chocolates.
Each tube was marked as weighing 387 grams, but the officers considered the baggage unusually heavy and opened the containers. Inside the chocolate packaging, they found 207 light-yellow, oval-shaped capsules. According to the DRI, the capsules contained a white powdery substance suspected to be cocaine.
The substance tested positive for cocaine using a Narcotic Drug Detection Kit. The agency said the recovered material weighed 4.9 kilograms in gross weight. It estimated the consignment’s value in the illicit market at approximately ₹24.5 crore.
The contraband was seized and the passenger was arrested under provisions of India’s Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
