Ebonyi Flood Survivors Seek Lasting Access as Waters Recede

Flash floods have devastated Ohuegu Mgbom N’Achara in Okposi, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, destroying homes and burying farmlands under mud. Residents said the community was cut off for days after torrential rain. Chinasa Emmanuel, a nursing mother, told Channels Television that she woke to find water covering her feet.

She carried her baby and dragged her other children through the rising water in darkness before spending the night under an open canopy on higher ground. Other residents described losing houses, clothing and harvested crops. John Ogonna said the flood took everything the community had been unable to save, while Aja Okoro said hunger was affecting children because cassava farms had been buried in mud.

The village was difficult to reach, with the journey involving bush paths, a canoe crossing and walks through flooded terrain, according to the report. Residents said the community already lacked motorable roads, electricity, clean drinking water, telecommunications coverage and basic schools. Udeh Chukwu-Obaji, secretary of the Mgbom N’Achara Community Development Union, said emergency supplies would help residents temporarily but appealed for an access road and bridge.

He said poor access meant assistance could not arrive quickly. Ebonyi Governor Francis Nwifuru approved emergency intervention funds, Commissioner Ann Aligwe said. She reported that more than 180 displaced families had been identified and said the state emergency agency was assessing affected areas.

Relief packages, food, bedding and medical support were expected to be sent to vulnerable residents.
