Five Britons bailed after arrests near RAF Fairford

Five British nationals arrested near RAF Fairford have been released on police bail while a counter-terrorism investigation continues. The men were detained in Whelford on Sunday after reports of three vehicles travelling towards the Gloucestershire airbase. They were arrested on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act and preparation of a terrorist act.

Police said the suspects, aged between 23 and 25, remained under investigation and were subject to conditions on movement and contact with others. Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor said investigators were keeping an open mind. He said the alleged offences could have been committed by proxies or individuals knowingly or unknowingly working for a foreign state.

Police have reportedly examined whether Iran was involved, but no such link has been established. Iran’s embassy in London rejected what it called unfounded speculation and said the reports were part of an anti-Iranian narrative. The investigation led to the evacuation of 85 households from the village.

A cordon remained in place, with police, military and other agencies working at the scene. Officials asked the public to remain vigilant and report anything suspicious. They also acknowledged disruption to local communities and said resources were being used to protect public safety while inquiries continued.
