Flood damage cuts East-West Road in Delta, commuters face major delays

Flash floods have damaged a section of the East-West Road at Oviri Junction in Agbarho, Delta State, disrupting traffic and prompting residents to seek urgent government intervention. The flooding followed days of heavy rainfall across the state. Residents said floodwater overwhelmed and collapsed the existing culvert, leaving both carriageways impassable.

Only a narrow part of the road remained available for vehicles. The damage has created long queues and left some commuters stranded. People who could not remain in the traffic were reported to have walked across the flooded section to continue their journeys, although residents warned that the rising water created serious risks for pedestrians.

Several homes in the community have also been submerged. Some residents were forced to leave their houses as water levels increased, adding to concerns about the impact on property and livelihoods. Residents and road users called on the relevant authorities, particularly the Federal Government, to repair the affected highway without delay.

They proposed replacing the collapsed culvert with a larger drainage structure or a bridge capable of carrying the volume of water through the area. They said a permanent solution would restore movement on the East-West Road and reduce the repeated flooding that has disrupted daily life and economic activity. Flooding has also affected other parts of the country. In Rivers State, persistent rainfall over about three days caused flooding in parts of Port Harcourt, including New G.R.A., sections of the Eliozu–G.U. Ake Road, Eneka, Elimgbu, Odili Road, SARS Road and parts of Rupokwu.

Some homes around Eneka were reportedly flooded. Videos circulating on social media showed residents appealing for help, while stagnant water remained in several areas of the city.
