Lavanya, 28, from Gangavaram village in Darakonda panchayat, gave birth to a boy on Thursday night, according to initial reports cited by The Hindu. She later became unconscious and her condition deteriorated.
Villagers attempted to take her to the Darakonda Primary Health Centre, about six kilometres away under normal conditions. However, several streams were overflowing after heavy rain linked to a deep depression that crossed the north Andhra coast on Thursday night. A bridge connecting the village to the plains had also been washed away, leaving the settlement cut off.
Residents reportedly searched for alternative routes but were unable to find transport because of the continuing rain and damaged roads. Lavanya died on Friday, while her newborn son was reported to be safe. The incident occurred despite warnings to district officials about the risk of disrupted connectivity.
