Four arrested over killing of VCK functionary in Ranipet

Kalavai police in Tamil Nadu have arrested four young men in connection with the killing of VCK functionary K. Sivakumar. Police said CCTV footage and social-media posts helped trace the suspects to a hideout near Arani, while their initial account linked the alleged attack to a dispute over borrowed money.
Kalavai police in Tamil Nadu’s Ranipet district have arrested four people in connection with the murder of local VCK functionary K. Sivakumar. The arrested men were identified by police as R.
Kaviarasu, 21, B. Mani, 22, G. Sarathi, 21, and S.
Dinesh, 21. Police said the four were childhood friends from the area near Kalavai town. Sivakumar, 60, was allegedly attacked while returning home near Kalavai on Thursday.
Police said a group travelling on two-wheelers hacked him to death. His body was sent to Government Medical College Hospital in Vellore for a postmortem examination. The killing prompted relatives and residents to stage a protest demanding the arrest of those responsible.
Superintendent of Police P. Sibin spoke to the protesters, who dispersed after revenue officials and police assured them that arrests would be made. Special teams examined CCTV footage from the route and analysed social-media reels in which, police said, the group claimed to be taking revenge on local political functionaries.
Investigators then traced the suspects to a hideout near Arani in neighbouring Tiruvannamalai district, where they were arrested. According to the initial police inquiry, the key suspect told investigators that he had a dispute with Sivakumar over borrowed money. Police said the suspect claimed that the victim had threatened him, and that he then attacked him with the help of his friends.
The account remains part of the investigation, and the source material does not report a court finding on the allegations. A case has been registered. The four arrested men were lodged in Central Prison in Vellore, while the investigation continues.
