Kerala child rights panel orders action to clear school route

The Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has directed officials in Thiruvananthapuram district to remove obstructions from a road used by schoolchildren. The order covers an alleged encroachment, an electricity post and a church pillar that the commission said were hindering safe passage and vehicle movement.
The Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has directed authorities to remove several obstructions from the Kuzhinjanvila-Thazhevila road in Karode grama panchayat, Thiruvananthapuram district, to safeguard the route used by schoolchildren. The commission acted on a complaint alleging that children faced difficulty walking safely to school because of a tiled-roof building constructed after an encroachment on ‘puramboke’ land. The complaint also said the obstruction affected the movement of school buses and other vehicles.
The commission directed the secretary of Karode grama panchayat to evict the encroachers. The secretary may seek assistance from the station house officer of Pozhiyoor police station while taking action under the Kerala Panchayat Raj Act. The Karode village officer, panchayat secretary and station house officer were all directed to act on the issue.
The order was issued by the commission’s full Bench, comprising F. Wilson, B. Mohankumar and K.K.
Shaju. The Kerala State Electricity Board executive engineer in Neyyattinkara was instructed to urgently shift an electricity post that was described as another impediment to travel along the road. The commission also directed the vicar of St.
Mary’s MSC church to relocate a church pillar situated at the starting point of the road. The petition was filed by A. Ajeesh, the Kuzhinjanvila ward member of Karode grama panchayat.
The directions seek to restore unobstructed access on the road for children, school buses and other vehicles. The source material does not specify a deadline for completing the removals or whether the encroachment action has begun.
