Nigeria’s Federal Government has no plans to increase electricity tariffs, Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe said on Monday in Abuja. Tegbe made the statement during a media meeting marking his first 100 days in office, covering the period from 8 June to 16 September. He said he had received several calls over the weekend after reports suggested that the government was preparing an upward review of electricity charges.
The minister described those reports as politically motivated ahead of next year’s general elections. He said the administration was instead focused on improving electricity supply to Nigerians. According to Tegbe, the government is pursuing renewable-energy solutions and carrying out a detailed audit of power infrastructure nationwide.
The audit is intended to identify critical gaps and address them, he said. His comments came amid concerns about the financial sustainability of Nigeria’s electricity market and the future of government support for the sector. Tegbe said the industry faced constraints throughout its value chain, adding that the connected challenges could not be resolved simply by increasing generation capacity.
