Haaland leads Premier League scorers during September international break

Fourteen Premier League players scored for their countries during the September international break, with Manchester City forward Erling Haaland the leading scorer, according to a review published by the Premier League. Haaland scored twice in Norway’s 3-2 Nations League win over Denmark before finding the net again in a 2-1 defeat by Portugal. The league said the 26-year-old now has 65 international goals in 57 appearances and is the Nations League’s leading scorer since the competition began in 2018.

Arsenal striker Viktor Gyökeres scored twice for Sweden in victories over Romania and Poland. Newcastle United forward Yoane Wissa also scored twice for the Democratic Republic of Congo. Liverpool’s Alexander Isak scored for Sweden in a 2-1 Nations League victory over Romania, while his club-mate Cody Gakpo equalised for the Netherlands against Germany in stoppage time.

Brighton’s Malick Yalcouyé scored and won a penalty on his Ivory Coast debut in a 2-0 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying win over Ghana. Brentford defender Michael Kayode scored on his Italy debut in a 4-1 victory over Turkey. Other one-goal scorers listed by the Premier League were Arsenal’s Christos Tzolis, Manchester United’s Bryan Mbeumo, Fulham’s Oscar Bobb and Shea Charles, Aston Villa’s Nicolas Jackson, Bournemouth’s Rayan, and Sunderland’s Wilson Isidor.

Isidor scored Haiti’s winning goal in the eighth minute of stoppage time in a 3-2 CONCACAF Nations League victory over Trinidad and Tobago. The league said he also supplied two assists. The review noted that Liverpool defender Jeremy Jacquet kept a clean sheet on his France debut in a 1-0 win over Belgium.

It also recorded injuries during international duty involving Isak, Gakpo, Arsenal’s Kai Havertz and Manchester United’s Patrick Dorgu. Premier League action resumes on October 10.
