Harry Kane wins 2026 Ballon d’Or after prolific Bayern season
Harry Kane has been named the 2026 Ballon d’Or winner after a record-setting campaign for Bayern Munich and England. The England captain becomes the first Englishman to claim the men’s award since Michael Owen in 2001. Reports describe the honour as the culmination of a career that began with loan spells before reaching football’s highest individual stage.
Harry Kane has won the 2026 Ballon d’Or, becoming the first Englishman in 25 years to receive the men’s award, according to reports from Sky Sports, BBC Sport and ESPN. The Bayern Munich and England striker was selected ahead of Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal and Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé. ESPN said Kane finished ahead of both players, while Sky Sports described his victory as the completion of a “Cinderella story” from early loan spells to the game’s leading individual prize.
Kane’s win followed an exceptional season. The Guardian reported that he scored 89 goals for club and country from the beginning of August 2025, while BBC Sport recorded 61 goals in 51 matches for Bayern and 73 goals in 65 matches when England appearances were included. His club total was a record for a Bayern player in one campaign.
BBC Sport said Kane scored 36 Bundesliga goals, 14 in the Champions League and 10 in the German Cup, including a hat-trick in the cup final. He also scored 12 times for England during the season. The award came despite Kane not winning either of the two most prominent competitions in which he played.
Bayern lost in the Champions League semi-finals, while England were beaten in the World Cup semi-finals. His individual figures nevertheless stood out: BBC Sport said his Bayern total was 19 more than that of any other player in Europe’s top five leagues. Kane is the fifth Englishman to win the prize, following Stanley Matthews, Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan and Michael Owen.
BBC Sport said he is also the first Bayern player to win the award since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in 1981. The 33-year-old’s career has included loan periods at Leyton Orient and Millwall before his rise at Tottenham, Bayern and England. He also equalled England’s all-time caps record earlier this month and has scored 91 international goals, according to The Guardian.
