Nigeria’s electoral commission will conduct a November test-run of its election technology and continue testing Bimodal Voter Accreditation System devices before the 2027 general elections, Ondo Resident Electoral Commissioner Mutiu Agboke says. The commission also plans expanded voter education and sensitisation to support participation and confidence.

The Independent National Electoral Commission will test its electoral technology in November as part of preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, Ondo Resident Electoral Commissioner Mutiu Agboke has said. Agboke disclosed the plan in Akure on Friday during the 2026 edition of The Convocation, a political programme focused on electioneering and the future of Nigeria’s democracy. He was represented by Olayinka Ogunseye, the state’s head of voter education, publicity, gender and inclusivity.

Agboke said INEC was also testing the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System devices expected to be used during the elections. He described the preparations as practical steps intended to improve the credibility and inclusiveness of the polls. The commission will also intensify voter education and public sensitisation ahead of the elections.

Agboke assured Nigerians that INEC was working towards a process that would be free, fair, inclusive and acceptable. Dotun Ojon, chairman of the Young Progressives Party in Ondo State, urged citizens to participate actively. He said the party was preparing to pursue seats in the National Assembly and state Houses of Assembly rather than focusing only on the presidential contest.

Ojon also called for more opportunities for smaller parties to win legislative seats, arguing that a stronger opposition would improve accountability in governance. Former state Sports Commissioner Dayo Awude identified the high cost of electioneering and weak internal democracy within parties as continuing challenges. Awude urged citizens not to abandon democratic engagement, while programme convener Henry Olonimoyo said sustained dialogue and civic education were needed to prevent young Nigerians from becoming disenchanted with democracy.

He said many young people had never experienced military rule, making continued public engagement important.
