Pastor Owolabi Ademola says prayer, open communication, mutual respect and commitment have helped sustain his 19-year marriage to Mrs Owolabi B. B. The couple, who met as university students, have three children and regard moving into their own home as one of their most significant shared milestones.

Pastor Owolabi Ademola has attributed the longevity of his 19-year marriage to prayer, communication, mutual respect and a shared commitment to their vows. Ademola, who spoke about his marriage in an interview with Punch, said he and his wife, Mrs Owolabi B. B., met in a university lecture room while they were both in their 300 Level.

He said they began as acquaintances before the relationship gradually developed into marriage. He said his wife was delighted when he proposed. Her father had died by then, but her mother received the proposal positively and gave her consent, according to Ademola.

The couple have three children—two girls and a boy. Ademola described moving into their own house as one of the most memorable moments they have shared, calling it a major milestone and a testimony of what he described as God’s faithfulness to their family. He said the couple had made it a priority to pray sincerely and seek God’s will over their marriage and major decisions.

He also advised young couples to communicate openly, respect each other, forgive readily and remain committed during difficult periods. Ademola warned that marriages lacking what he called a solid foundation in God could be more vulnerable when challenges arise. He recommended patience, humility, honesty, love, understanding, perseverance and mutual respect for couples dealing with pressure.

On marriage breakups in Nigeria, he said couples should operate as one rather than as separate individuals and be willing to make sacrifices for one another. He added that commitment from both partners, guided by their faith and conduct, was necessary to build a strong and enduring home.
