Kano lawmakers seek relief after flooding destroys more than 200 rice farms

The Kano State House of Assembly has called for emergency assistance for residents and farmers in Shuwaki after flooding destroyed more than 200 rice farms and damaged a bridge, according to a motion adopted by the lawmakers. The flooding followed a heavy downpour last Thursday in the town, which is located in Tudun Wada Local Government Area. The motion was presented during plenary by Sule Shuwaki, who represents the Tudun Wada constituency.

Shuwaki said the affected farms belonged to local rice farmers. He also said floodwater washed away a historic bridge along the Tudun Wada-Shuwaki Road, disrupting movement for students and other residents. The damaged crossing has made it harder for residents to reach their farms and travel between the affected communities, the lawmaker said.

He added that the situation was harming the area’s socio-economic activities. Shuwaki urged the state government to provide relief materials and other support to affected farmers and residents. He also called for the immediate reconstruction of the bridge and damaged road.
