Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has announced a ₹100 crore allocation for a Gandhi memorial in Belagavi, where Mahatma Gandhi presided over the Congress session in 1924. He also said memorial pillars would be installed at sites across the state visited by Gandhi during the freedom struggle.

Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has announced that the state will allocate ₹100 crore to build a Gandhi memorial in Belagavi. The proposed memorial will commemorate the 1924 Congress session in Belagavi, which Gandhi presided over.

Shivakumar said the allocation would be included in the next State Budget. He made the announcement after inaugurating a Gandhi Digital Museum at Gandhi Bhavan in Bengaluru on Friday. He also said memorial pillars would be erected at all places Gandhi visited in Karnataka during the freedom struggle.

The pillars are to be completed before Gandhi Jayanti in 2027. Shivakumar unveiled the first at Government Arts and Science College in Bengaluru. Sculptor Arun Yogiraj of Mysuru created it.

The state has already allocated ₹5.09 crore in its 2026-27 Budget for pillars at 87 locations under the Gandhi Bharata campaign. The first site is linked to Gandhi’s visit on May 8, 1915, when he and Kasturba visited what was then a government high school. Shivakumar said his party had worked to preserve Gandhi’s name and cited the naming of a rural development and panchayat raj university after him.

He also encouraged residents to visit a replica of Sabarmati Ashram in Gadag.
