Karnataka notifies expanded mobility road network around Bengaluru

The Karnataka government has notified a new mobility road grid for the Bengaluru Metropolitan Region beyond the Greater Bengaluru Authority area, seeking to guide expansion in fast-urbanising areas around the city. The notification was issued under the Revised Bengaluru Structure Plan-2031 by the Bengaluru Metropolitan Region Development Authority. Officials said the exercise followed a drone survey that identified gaps in the regional road network.

Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda said the plan covered hundreds of existing roads, including zilla panchayat, Public Works Department and State Highway routes proposed for widening. Some roads currently as narrow as 10 metres have been notified for widths of 30, 45 or, in some cases, 90 metres. BMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Rajendra Cholan said many of the routes were brownfield roads that would be widened to connect village roads with district roads and major regional corridors.

The plan includes improvements to the route between Anekal and Hoskote, as well as Chapparakallu Road and IVC Road. It also provides for integrated freight hubs and intermodal transport hubs in major surrounding towns. Proposed infrastructure includes monorail, metro and bus rapid transport corridors.

Government bodies operating under the metropolitan region are expected to implement the road projects over time. Gowda said the identified network ran into thousands of kilometres and could not be built simultaneously. Construction would therefore be phased according to priority and could take five to 10 years.

He asked residents not to construct buildings or develop layouts along the notified alignments. Officials were directed to publish videos and display alignment details on relevant government and local authority notice boards.
