The second phase of Kerala’s 100 MW Kasaragod solar park will include a 50 MW/100 MWh battery energy storage system after approval by India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. Officials say the storage facility is intended to help meet evening peak demand, while the electricity board develops several other battery projects across the state.

The second phase of the proposed 100 MW Kasaragod solar park in Kerala will include a battery energy storage system intended to help meet the state’s evening peak demand. India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy approved the addition of a 50 MW/100 MWh battery system to the project. The decision comes as Kerala faces power shortages during periods of high demand and expands its solar generation capacity.

The ministry approved the establishment of the second phase of the Kasaragod Solar Park at Cheemeni in Kasaragod district in February 2024. A revised detailed project report incorporating the battery system was approved in April 2026. The Central Electricity Authority said in its June 2026 status report on solar parks that the Kerala State Electricity Board had approved a tender for a 50 MW, two-hour battery system alongside the solar plant.

The MW figure refers to the maximum power the system can deliver at one time, while MWh describes its storage capacity. Under the sanctioned project report, all activities connected with the solar project are due to be completed by 6 April 2028. The electricity board has also established a monitoring committee to oversee implementation and progress.

The eight-member committee is headed by the Power Secretary and includes senior officials from the electricity board and the Agency for New and Renewable Energy Research and Technology. The chief executive officer of Renewable Power Corporation of Kerala Limited is the committee’s convener. The KSEB is separately developing battery storage projects at Mylatty and Mulleria in Kasaragod, Areacode in Malappuram, Sreekandapuram in Kannur and Pothencode in Thiruvananthapuram.

Those projects are expected to be ready by the end of the year, according to the source material.
