Kogi takes mobile medical screening to Koton Karfe correctional centre

The Kogi State Government has extended mobile medical services to inmates and personnel at the Koton Karfe Correctional Centre, providing screening and other health services to at least 188 beneficiaries. The outreach was conducted on Friday by the state Ministry of Health as part of an initiative launched by Governor Ahmed Ododo to improve access to healthcare for people in correctional facilities. The medical team, led by Dr.

Komolafe, used portable digital X-ray technology with artificial intelligence capability to screen for tuberculosis and other chest-related conditions. It also collected body samples for more advanced laboratory investigations. Kogi Commissioner for Health, Dr.

Adams Abdulazeez, said the exercise reflected the administration’s commitment to ensuring that inmates and correctional personnel were not excluded from essential healthcare services. He said the governor had reaffirmed support for federal efforts to improve the welfare, safety and dignity of people in correctional facilities. The inmates and staff expressed appreciation for the intervention.

One inmate said the exercise made him feel that he had not been forgotten, describing the outreach as a demonstration of concern for his wellbeing. Abdulazeez commended the correctional centre’s management, personnel and inmates for their cooperation with the medical team. He also said the Ministry of Health would sustain the intervention and extend similar services to other correctional facilities across the state.

The commissioner said the programme was part of the state administration’s wider effort to strengthen access to healthcare and ensure that government services reach every segment of the population. The outreach therefore combined immediate screening with plans for further investigations and additional medical visits to correctional facilities in Kogi.
