Lagos first lady extends elderly support visits to Badagry

Lagos State First Lady Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu has extended the state’s elderly visitation programme to communities in the Badagry division, saying senior citizens should continue to feel valued and supported. According to a statement issued by the Lagos State Government on Monday, Sanwo-Olu made the remarks during visits to older residents in Badagry Central Local Government Area, Badagry West Local Council Development Area and Olorunda LCDA. She said the programme was intended to provide more than financial assistance.

It was also designed to show love, respect and appreciation for the contributions older people had made to society. “Growing old should never mean being forgotten by the society they helped to build,” she said, adding that senior citizens should remain included whether or not they were still working or able to perform activities they once could. Sanwo-Olu described Badagry as an area with a rich history and cultural heritage whose residents remained important to Lagos’s story.

She also acknowledged elderly welfare initiatives led by Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, under the Renewed Hope Initiative. The statement said the first phase of the Badagry visits began on July 29, with visits to senior citizens in Oori-Ade, Amuwo-Odofin and Ojo. Beneficiaries received food items and cash support.

Sanwo-Olu said the Lagos, Ikorodu and Epe divisions had already been covered by the ongoing programme. Badagry has now been added, leaving Ikeja as the only division yet to be reached.
