Former Nigerian leaders and Christian figures have paid tribute to William Okoye, the late former Aso Rock Villa Chapel chaplain and general overseer of All Christians Fellowship Mission. The tributes were delivered at a Night of Tributes held at the National Christian Centre in Abuja on Friday. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo described Okoye as a statesman of faith and a fearless voice of truth.
In a tribute read by Bishop Godwin Isaac, Obasanjo recalled working with Okoye between 1999 and 2007. He said the clergyman offered wisdom and guidance during difficult moments, going beyond his duties as chaplain. Former President Goodluck Jonathan said he first met Okoye while serving as governor of Bayelsa State and worshipping at the Villa Chapel.
He recalled that Okoye later served as chaplain during his presidency and praised his integrity. Former Head of State Yakubu Gowon, speaking virtually, described Okoye as a pioneer of Nigeria Prays and remembered his support for the movement since its creation in 1996. Other speakers recalled Okoye’s work with Christian organisations and public bodies.
Okoye served on the Presidential Advisory Council on Youth Affairs, represented the Federal Capital Territory at the National Political Reform Conference, and held leadership roles in the Christian Association of Nigeria and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria. His wife, Toyin Okoye, thanked those who supported the family. Their son Victor said his father left a legacy of values, kindness and a good name.
Okoye is survived by his wife, six children and nine grandchildren.
