Robert Lewandowski became the oldest player to score a hat-trick in UEFA Nations League history as Poland defeated Romania 6-0 in Warsaw. The captain scored three times in his record 170th international appearance, taking his Poland tally to 92, although he will miss the next match after receiving a second yellow card.

Robert Lewandowski scored three times as Poland defeated Romania 6-0 in Warsaw on Friday, setting a new record as the oldest player to score a hat-trick in UEFA Nations League history. Lewandowski, aged 38 years and 42 days, surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo’s previous record. Ronaldo was 34 years and 120 days old when he scored three times for Portugal against Switzerland in the 2019 Nations League semi-final.

The Poland captain opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 24th minute after Romania defender Radu Drăgușin was sent off for a tactical foul. Lewandowski doubled the lead two minutes after half-time. Virgil Ghiță then scored an own goal in the 49th minute before Piotr Zieliński added Poland’s fourth in the 62nd minute.

Jan Bednarek headed in the fifth four minutes later, and Lewandowski completed his hat-trick in the 86th minute. The victory was Poland’s first in this Nations League campaign. The Polish Football Association confirmed that the treble was Lewandowski’s seventh for the national team and came in his record-extending 170th appearance.

His three goals took his international total to 92, moving him further among Europe’s leading international scorers. His previous hat-trick for Poland came against Latvia in October 2019. Poland now have four points from three matches in Nations League League B Group 4.

They remain third behind Sweden and Bosnia and Herzegovina, while Romania are bottom without a point. Lewandowski will miss Poland’s next fixture against Bosnia and Herzegovina after receiving a second yellow card of the campaign. Poland travel to Bosnia and Herzegovina on Monday as they continue their promotion bid.
