Nigeria’s deputy Senate president calls for unity on 66th Independence Day

Nigeria’s Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, has urged citizens to renew their faith in the country and remain committed to building a stronger, more prosperous and secure nation. His message was issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, ahead of Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary. The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday for the occasion.

Mr. Barau asked Nigerians to reflect on the country’s journey and honour the sacrifices of the founding fathers and others who contributed to independence and nation-building. He said unity, peace, justice, tolerance and a shared commitment to national progress should continue to guide the country.

He acknowledged that Nigeria had made significant progress while continuing to face challenges. With unity, resilience and confidence in their collective capacity, Nigerians would overcome present difficulties, he said. Mr.

Barau also urged citizens to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s policies and programmes under the Renewed Hope Agenda. He said cooperation between citizens and government was needed to build a stronger, more prosperous and secure country. As First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, he said the National Assembly remained committed to providing the legislative framework needed to address national challenges.

He specifically referred to the State Police Bill, which is before state Houses of Assembly. According to Mr. Barau, passage by the state legislatures and assent by the President would strengthen internal security and help address security challenges in parts of the country.

He said the National Assembly would continue working with the Executive within the Constitution to support economic growth, security, development and improved living conditions.
