Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has begun investigating a passenger arrested with $265,000 at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano State. The suspect, Adam Musa Adam, a Nigerian passport holder arriving from New Delhi on Ethiopian Airlines flight ET941, was intercepted on September 26 during routine screening by Nigeria Customs Service officers. Customs said the passenger’s luggage was selected for secondary examination after being flagged by non-intrusive inspection technology.
Officers then found the undeclared currency concealed among his personal belongings. The Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller Usman Umar Adamu, said carrying foreign currency above the approved threshold without declaring it breached provisions of Nigeria’s Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022 and the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023. Customs handed the suspect and the money to the EFCC.
The agency’s acting Kano zonal director, Assistant Commander Friday S. Ebelo, said the transfer demonstrated cooperation between the two institutions. Ebelo said the EFCC would investigate and prosecute the case to its conclusion.
Customs said it had intercepted undeclared foreign currency and other negotiable instruments worth more than 2.5 billion naira since January.
