Nigeria’s humanitarian minister urges broader support for vulnerable citizens

Humanitarian Affairs Minister Bernard Doro has called for stronger solidarity with vulnerable Nigerians as the country marks its 66th Independence Anniversary. He said government has a central duty to protect citizens facing hardship, but families, communities, civil society, businesses and development partners must share responsibility for inclusion and recovery.
Nigeria’s Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Bernard M. Doro, has urged citizens and institutions to strengthen support for vulnerable people as the country marks its 66th Independence Anniversary. Doro said the anniversary should be a time not only to celebrate independence but also to consider the shared responsibility of building an inclusive society.
His comments were contained in a statement issued in Abuja by his Senior Technical Adviser on Information Systems and Data Analysis, Abimbola Fasanu. The minister said government had a fundamental responsibility to protect vulnerable citizens and create opportunities for them to improve their lives. He added, however, that government could not carry the responsibility alone.
According to Doro, families, communities, civil society organisations, the private sector and development partners all have roles in addressing humanitarian challenges and reducing poverty. He called for the spirit of solidarity to be strengthened across the country. Doro also advocated greater emphasis on humanitarian values in schools.
He said children should be taught empathy, service, responsibility and respect for human dignity from an early age. He identified poor people, displaced persons, persons with disabilities, older people, children and families facing hardship as groups whose treatment should reflect Nigeria’s commitment to human dignity. He said the strength of a society was reflected in how it treated its most vulnerable members.
The minister said assistance should extend beyond immediate relief. He described the Federal Government’s approach as a move from palliatives towards pathways linking emergency support with recovery, empowerment, resilience and sustainable economic participation. Doro congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Nigerians at home and abroad.
He urged citizens to renew their commitment to compassion, solidarity and shared responsibility, saying nation-building depended on protecting vulnerable people and creating opportunities for all Nigerians to live with dignity.
