Nigeria is seeking German investment and technology to support the revival of its steel and metallurgical industries, the Minister of Steel Development, Shuaibu Audu, said on Friday. Audu spoke when he received a delegation of German original equipment manufacturers led by Chux Onaa, head of VDMA-German OEMs, at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja. He said the meeting was intended to convert earlier discussions between Nigeria and Germany into concrete investment and industrial partnerships.
The minister said the two countries had previously discussed steel development, mining, mineral processing, engineering and technology transfer at the German-African Economic Forum in Dortmund. He described the delegation’s visit as evidence of growing interest in Nigeria’s industrial sector. Areas identified for cooperation include modern technology, equipment manufacturing and supply, mineral processing, steel production, engineering services, capacity development and technology transfer.
Audu said Nigeria wanted German manufacturers to participate in ongoing and emerging projects in the steel and metallurgical sectors. He said Nigeria had significant mineral and metallurgical raw materials and a large market, while the government was seeking a technology-driven and sustainable steel industry capable of supporting infrastructure, manufacturing, job creation and economic diversification. Audu added that stronger cooperation could help build domestic value chains and reduce dependence on imported equipment and technologies.
Permanent Secretary Nura Abba Rimi said the engagement was consistent with the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the creation of the ministry to accelerate steel-sector revitalisation. Onaa said the delegation was in Nigeria to consolidate existing discussions. He said German manufacturers had technologies that could help process raw materials for industries including cement and building materials.
The government hopes the talks will produce specific investment and collaboration proposals.
