Hunye asks court to review Adeola’s past electoral declarations

Former Ogun State governorship aspirant Abayomi Hunye has filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking a judicial review of electoral documents submitted under oath by Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi. According to a statement issued by Hunye’s media adviser, Femi Oyewole, the action asks the court to examine Adeola’s previous Independent National Electoral Commission nomination forms and determine the state of origin declared by the lawmaker in earlier elections. Hunye’s lead counsel, Olamide Victor, said the challenge was not directed at Adeola’s indigeneity as a Yewa native.

He said it instead concerned alleged inconsistencies in public documents and possible perjury. Victor said Adeola had held elected offices for more than two decades and questioned what state of origin he had declared in nomination documents filed when he contested elections in Lagos State. He said certified copies of the relevant forms obtained from INEC repositories would be presented in court.

The suit is the latest development in the dispute between Hunye and Adeola over the All Progressives Congress governorship ticket for the 2027 Ogun election. Adeola was declared winner of the party primary on May 21 with 304,055 votes out of 305,287 accredited voters, while Hunye was recorded as receiving no votes. Hunye said he had petitioned the APC Governorship Primary Appeal Committee but received no response.

He also questioned the party’s claim that he had been suspended on April 7, 2026, noting that the APC accepted his N50m payment for expression-of-interest and nomination forms on April 28 and cleared him to contest. He denied that the case was funded by Peoples Democratic Party candidate Ladi Adebutu, describing it as an effort to test the legality of the party’s internal process.
