Police investigate death of newborn found abandoned near Bengaluru lake

Police in Bengaluru have launched an investigation after a newborn baby boy was found dead in a bag near Agara Lake in HSR Layout on Sunday morning. The infant had been wrapped in a bedsheet and placed inside the bag before being abandoned. The incident came to light at about 7.30 a.m.

on September 27, when Maruthi, a 27-year-old driver from Ramamurthy Nagar, noticed the bag while visiting the lake with a friend. According to his complaint, Maruthi saw a baby’s leg protruding from the bag. He found blood on the infant’s leg and, after realising that the baby appeared to be dead, alerted the police control room.

Police personnel reached the location and secured the body. The infant is suspected to have been abandoned shortly after birth, though the circumstances surrounding the death have not been established. The HSR Layout police registered a case under Section 94 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.

The investigation is intended to identify the child’s parents or other people responsible for the infant’s care. Officers are also examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area and collecting other evidence. The police are seeking to establish how the baby came to be at the lake, who abandoned the child and the sequence of events leading to the death.
