North Wales Police are seeking the mother of a newborn girl whose body was found on the Menai Strait shoreline in Bangor. An initial post-mortem indicated that the baby may have been in the water for up to several weeks. Police urged the mother to come forward, promising discretion and access to medical support.

North Wales Police are searching for the mother of a newborn girl whose body was found on the shoreline of the Menai Strait in Bangor, Gwynedd. A member of the public discovered the body near Siliwen Road shortly before 17:00 BST on Sunday. The force said on Thursday that a post-mortem examination identified the baby as a girl.

Initial indications suggested that the newborn may have been in the water for up to a few weeks. Further tests are being conducted to establish more information about the baby, police said. Supt Llinos Davies appealed directly to the mother to contact the force.

She acknowledged that the woman might be afraid to come forward but said her welfare and safety were the police’s “utmost concern”. Davies also asked people to contact police if they were concerned about a woman or girl who might have been pregnant, or whose behaviour had become unusual in recent months, including withdrawal from friends, family or social connections. She said information would be handled discreetly and that people identified by the public could be eliminated as potential mothers without delay.

The supplied material did not say whether police had identified any suspects or established how the baby entered the water. Fiona Giraud, director of midwifery and women’s services at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, also appealed to the mother. She said the immediate priorities were to find her, ensure her safety and provide any medical attention and support she might need.

Giraud said the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death were not yet known and urged the mother not to face the situation alone. No cause of death was provided in the report. The investigation remains under way.

Police thanked the community for its assistance but did not provide further details about searches, forensic testing or possible leads.
