The Sydney Roosters celebrated their 19-18 NRL grand-final victory over Newcastle with supporters at Easts Bondi Junction. Mark Nawaqanitawase scored twice and was praised by coach Trent Robinson after a decisive performance, before the winger leaves the league to play rugby in Japan next year.

The Sydney Roosters celebrated their NRL grand-final victory with supporters in Bondi after defeating the Newcastle Knights 19-18. Mark Nawaqanitawase lifted the Provan-Summons trophy at Easts Bondi Junction in the early hours after helping decide the close final. The winger scored two tries and was told not to drop the trophy before raising it for the crowd.

Roosters captain and Clive Churchill medallist James Tedesco thanked supporters who had followed the club throughout the season. He said fans had backed the team at home, away and at Homebush. Nawaqanitawase’s first try came shortly before half-time when he used his left- and right-foot kicking skills before regathering the ball.

The Roosters had trailed 12-0 despite dominating several statistical areas. His second try came in the corner after a left-foot step, requiring speed, balance and strength to complete the finish. The performance took his tally to 47 tries in 47 NRL games.

Coach Trent Robinson described the 26-year-old as an extraordinary player and said his ability created an unusual sense of anticipation whenever he received the ball. Robinson also praised his work carrying the ball out of the backfield. Nawaqanitawase will leave the NRL next year to play rugby in Japan.

Robinson said he hoped the winger’s performances would inspire a new generation of players with similar skills. The Knights’ defeat ended their challenge in a match that had the potential for a more romantic outcome, but the Roosters held on to claim the premiership. Their celebrations continued with supporters after the final.
