Russian drone strikes kill five across Ukraine, officials say

Russian drone attacks killed five people in Ukraine on Sunday, including two at a market outside Kyiv, according to Ukrainian officials and prosecutors. The strike on a market in Sofiiska Borshchahivka, on Kyiv’s western outskirts, killed two people and injured about 10, prosecutors said. Images posted online showed fires, damaged vehicles and debris at the site.

Kyiv also came under attack. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said nine people were injured, including a child, and that six were receiving hospital treatment. Drones struck residential buildings, causing fires, while other areas near a kindergarten and a playground were also affected, he said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia had launched 277 attack drones of various types since Saturday, including 155 jet-powered drones. He described the attacks on civilian targets as “terrorism” and said they had no military purpose. In Sumy, three glide bombs struck near a family support centre, killing two people, regional governor Oleh Hryhorov said.

The city lies near the Russian border and has frequently come under attack. In Kharkiv, prosecutors said a drone struck a car and killed the driver. Ukraine’s largest mobile-service provider also reported damage to its headquarters, which it said was part of continuing attacks on data centres and communications infrastructure.

No casualties were reported there. Russia’s defence ministry said its forces had struck two data centres in Kyiv, a logistics hub in Odesa and two cargo vessels bound for Odesa. Both Russia and Ukraine deny deliberately targeting civilians.
