Speaker funds exam registration for 120 inmates in Abuja

Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas has sponsored the registration of 120 inmates in the Federal Capital Territory for the 2026 National Business and Technical Examinations Board and National Examinations Council examinations. The Nigerian Correctional Service’s FCT public relations officer, DSC Ahmed Duza, announced the initiative in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday. It formed part of activities marking Abbas’s 61st birthday.
The registration took place at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kuje. During the event, results were symbolically presented to inmates who sat the 2025 NABTEB and NECO examinations. Representing Abbas, his special adviser on humanitarian affairs, David Igbe, said the support reflected the Speaker’s commitment to ensuring that imprisonment did not prevent access to education, personal development or opportunities for a better future.
FCT Controller of Corrections Christopher Jen, representing the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, described education as an important part of inmates’ reformation, rehabilitation and reintegration. He thanked Abbas and called for employment opportunities for reformed inmates, saying they were prepared to contribute to national development. SC Igomu Augustine, representing the deputy controller-general responsible for inmates’ training and productivity, commended the initiative.
He said Abbas was leading efforts to register inmates for NECO examinations across custodial centres. The command’s education desk officer, DSC Adikwu Owoicho, said more than 2,000 inmates had been registered for various educational programmes in the FCT command. He added that inmates who took the 2025 examinations recorded encouraging performances.
The event included testimonies, birthday tributes, prayers and the cutting of a birthday cake.
