Telangana considers tourism coupons to draw Hyderabad’s IT workforce on weekends
Telangana is considering special tourism programmes and coupons for Hyderabad’s software employees, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka has said. The Telangana government is considering tourism coupons and special programmes to encourage Hyderabad’s IT professionals to visit destinations across the State at weekends. Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka asked Tourism Minister Jupally Krishna Rao and officials to discuss the proposal with chief executives of major IT companies and tourism operators. He made the suggestion at World Tourism Day celebrations at Shilparamam in Hyderabad.
Bhatti said the State’s large software workforce could help create a new domestic tourism market while bringing attention to lesser-known destinations. The proposal forms part of a broader effort to use digital technology and private investment to expand Telangana’s tourism sector. This year’s World Tourism Day theme was “Digital Agenda: Reimagining Tourism with Artificial Intelligence”.
Bhatti called for greater use of AI and digital tools to promote Telangana internationally and build a distinct identity for the State. Tourism and Culture Minister Jupally Krishna Rao said the government was seeking ₹50,000 crore in tourism investment and expected the sector to create five lakh jobs. The Telangana Tourism Policy 2025-30 had initially set an investment target of ₹15,000 crore, he said, but the ambition was later raised following the Chief Minister’s direction.
The government has identified 27 Special Tourism Areas under the policy. Officials said the State wanted to expand beyond established destinations and develop attractions including Buddhist sites, waterfalls, rivers, wellness facilities, medical tourism, weddings, conventions, film-related tourism, ecotourism and adventure activities. Tourism Department Special Chief Secretary Vani Prasad said tourism could function as an economic and development engine, supporting jobs from guiding to major investment projects.
She also emphasised living culture and arts as part of the State’s tourism identity. The Telangana Tourism Development Corporation operates restaurants, transport services, packages, fairs and festivals, as well as boating facilities at about 99 locations. Its managing director, P.
Gouthami, said the corporation was seeking private partners to modernise facilities and develop projects including floating restaurants and houseboats at selected sites.
