Telangana power utilities prepare for expected demand increase

Telangana’s power utilities have been directed to prepare for rising electricity demand and strengthen transmission and distribution networks ahead of the coming months. The instruction was issued at a “Network Planning – Summer Action Plan” meeting in Hyderabad on Tuesday. TGSPDCL Chairman and Managing Director Jitesh V.

Patil asked officials to prepare for additional loads and maintain uninterrupted supply. Areas served by TGSPDCL recorded a peak load of 12,044 megawatts at 3.52pm on Tuesday, the highest recorded in those areas. The previous peak was 11,828 MW on September 11.

Within Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation limits, the maximum demand was 4,782 MW on May 22, when energy consumption reached 101.07 million units. Statewide, the highest energy consumption was 344.4 million units on March 13, while the highest peak load was 19,543 MW on September 9. Officials were told to prepare network expansion plans for both current requirements and projected demand over the next five to 10 years.

Patil called for faster capacity augmentation at heavily loaded substations, feeders and power transformers. Circle-level proposals are to cover new extra-high-tension and ultra-high-voltage substations, 33/11 kV substations, additional transformers, upgraded transformer capacity, new feeders, switching stations and interlinking lines. The CMD also directed officials to prepare infrastructure plans for industrial corridors including Madharam–Ghatkesar, Thimmapur–Kandukur, Eliminedu–Ibrahimpatnam and Dandumalkapur–Choutuppal, in coordination with TGIIC.

Officials were asked to prioritise dual-source power systems for data centres, IT parks, major industries and other critical consumers, and to identify heavily loaded 33 kV and 11 kV feeders requiring reinforcement.
