Telangana is preparing to host the eighth Khelo India Youth Games from December 11 to 22, with more than 7,500 young athletes expected to compete in 27 sports. The Games will be staged across six cities: Hyderabad, Warangal, Hanumakonda, Karimnagar, Nizamabad and Mahabubnagar. Organisers also expect more than 1,500 support staff, 1,000 technical officials and over 200 VIPs to attend.

Hyderabad will host events in 23 disciplines, while selected competitions will be held at district venues. Athletics is scheduled for Hanumakonda, judo for Karimnagar, archery for Khammam, kabaddi for Mahabubnagar and table tennis for Nizamabad. Rowing has been designated Telangana’s host-State choice sport, while sailing will be the demonstration sport.

The Hussain Sagar water sports facility is expected to host rowing, kayaking and canoeing. Other venues include Gachibowli Stadium, LB Stadium, Saroornagar indoor stadium, JNTUH, Secunderabad and the Kotla Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy Stadium. The state government has identified 12 upgrade and development works at 10 venues in Hyderabad and three district host cities.

The work includes improvements to changing rooms, spectator facilities, washrooms, swimming pools, cycling tracks, shooting ranges and other competition areas. The opening ceremony is likely to be held at Gachibowli Stadium on December 11, while the closing event could take place at the LB Stadium Tennis Complex on December 22. Five committees have been formed for the Games.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy will chair the organising committee, with Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya as co-chairperson. A separate committee will oversee accommodation, catering and transport.

The supplied report says Prime Minister Narendra Modi may attend as chief guest, but this was not confirmed.
