The Tirupati Economic Region will explore the development of Tirupati as a global wedding destination, officials said at a stakeholders’ conference on Wednesday. Mukesh Kumar Meena, chief executive of the Tirupati Economic Region, said 50 to 100 potential projects would be identified over the next four months. He said weddings could generate activity across accommodation, transport, catering, decoration, event management, photography, traditional arts and entertainment.
Meena said the concept should serve families across income groups rather than focus only on premium or luxury events. He proposed a combination of premium, mid-range and budget venues so that families could organise celebrations according to their requirements and affordability. The wedding experience could also be connected with Tirupati’s spiritual and cultural attractions, he said.
Guests could combine wedding events and the Tirumala pilgrimage with visits to heritage, cultural and nature destinations in Tirupati, Chittoor, Nellore and surrounding areas. According to Meena, such a development could benefit hotels, convention centres, banquet halls, caterers, decorators, transport operators, photographers, florists, event managers, artisans, textile businesses and jewellery companies. He said the emerging service economy would create opportunities for local young people, provided they received training in event management, hospitality, catering, tourism services, transport and digital services.
Planning Secretary Ananth Shankar said the strategy should bring together the resources and requirements of all three districts through a long-term regional plan. He said longer stays by pilgrims and tourists would require simultaneous improvements in accommodation, transport and other infrastructure.
