TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh injured after alleged attack en route to Bengal rally

Trinamool Congress MLA Kunal Ghosh was injured on Saturday after his vehicle was allegedly attacked while he was travelling to a public meeting addressed by former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Serampore, Hooghly, The Hindu reported. Ghosh said a group blocked his vehicle at Sakherbazar in Uttarpara. Eggs and stones were allegedly thrown at the car, which was also attacked with sticks, while slogans were raised against him.

The Beleghata MLA said he was unable to attend the meeting and had to return to Kolkata because of his injuries. He later went to Bhabani Bhawan, the West Bengal Police Headquarters, where he sought to meet senior police officers about the incident. Banerjee said the party had fought in court for more than 15 days to obtain permission for the rally.

She alleged that the road to Serampore had been blocked and that there was no sign of the police when the disruption occurred. She questioned why her party had to approach the courts repeatedly to hold political meetings. Banerjee also alleged that attempts had been made to disrupt the gathering and asked why opposition parties were not being allowed to organise rallies if the Bharatiya Janata Party had genuinely won the elections.

The Mamata TMC’s official account on X said Ghosh’s car had been vandalised and alleged that party workers travelling to Serampore were repeatedly attacked while police watched. The party described the incident as a threat to democracy, according to the report. The Calcutta High Court had granted permission for the meeting on September 17, while limiting attendance to 1,000 people.

The rally was described as Banerjee’s first meeting in the districts since her party’s Assembly election defeat; she had previously addressed meetings in Kolkata.
