UBEC launches platform for public tracking of education projects

The Universal Basic Education Commission has unveiled a digital platform that will allow parents and communities to monitor education projects and funds accessed by states. UBEC Executive Secretary Aisha Garba announced the Basic Education Action Plan Management System in Abuja on Monday during a consultative workshop with State Universal Basic Education Board chairmen and commission directors. Garba said the system was designed to improve transparency, planning and monitoring under UBEC’s 2026–2035 roadmap.

State board chairmen have been onboarded, and full deployment is expected in October. She said the platform would provide information on state funding and projects being implemented, enabling communities to monitor interventions and hold authorities accountable for both spending and project quality. UBEC is also adopting a “whole school approach”.

Under the model, states must assess the complete needs of individual schools before intervention plans are approved. Requirements such as classrooms, fencing, toilets, furniture, computers and water facilities are to be considered together. Garba said the matching-grant formula had been revised to give states more flexibility.

Funds may be used for renovation, enrolment materials and additional teachers where those needs are identified. The 10-year roadmap is scheduled to begin in the first week of October. UBEC said the new system would provide public oversight as states implement their basic education plans.
