Former Sokoto governor and senator Aliyu Wamakko has urged Nigerians to promote unity, tolerance and peaceful coexistence as the country marks its 66th Independence Anniversary. In a goodwill message, he said citizens should renew their commitment to building a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria despite ethnic, religious, regional and political differences.

Former Sokoto State governor and senator Aliyu Wamakko has called on Nigerians to promote unity, peace and mutual understanding as the country marks its 66th Independence Anniversary. Wamakko, who represents Sokoto North Senatorial District and leads the All Progressives Congress in Sokoto State, made the appeal in a goodwill message issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Bashar Abubakar. He congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad and described the anniversary as an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices of the country’s founding fathers and others who contributed to Nigeria’s development.

Wamakko urged citizens to renew their commitment to building a peaceful, united and prosperous country. He said Nigeria’s diversity and the resilience of its people were important strengths in confronting national challenges. “We must continue to strengthen the bonds of unity, uphold the values of peace and patriotism, and contribute our quota towards building the Nigeria of our collective aspirations,” he said.

He also called for tolerance, peaceful coexistence, mutual respect and understanding, saying responsibility for national development rested with all Nigerians. Wamakko paid tribute to members of the Armed Forces and other security agencies for their sacrifices in protecting the country and maintaining peace. The senator separately congratulated the people of Sokoto State and Sokoto North Senatorial District, as well as traditional and religious leaders.

He urged residents to uphold values associated with the Sokoto Caliphate, including peaceful coexistence, respect for others and concern for community welfare. He prayed for continued peace, security, unity and prosperity in Nigeria.
