Wayanad to launch phased campaign to remove electronic waste

The Suchitwa Mission is organising the drive with local self-government institutions. The first phase, running from September 28 to 30, will collect e-waste accumulated at government institutions across the district.
The material will be collected through the Clean Kerala Company and transferred for scientific disposal. Collection centres will operate at the Vocational Higher Secondary School in Mananthavady on September 28, the Sulthan Bathery Mini Civil Station on September 29 and the Civil Station in Kalpetta on September 30. The campaign will include discarded items such as tubes, compact fluorescent bulbs and batteries.
Officials said these materials could cause environmental pollution if they were disposed of improperly. The second phase will address e-waste held by members of the public. Local self-government institutions will designate collection centres, and the process is expected to be completed by October 2.
Households and private establishments participating in the second phase will receive the amount specified in the rate card for the material they hand over. The payment will be credited to their accounts through Haritha Karma Sena. The campaign follows an earlier decision at a meeting chaired by Agriculture Minister T.
Siddique to declare Wayanad a completely e-waste-free district. Suchitwa Mission officials said the initiative was intended to make Wayanad a model district in waste management.
