Worker dies during demolition of old building in Anambra

A 25-year-old worker died on Tuesday after part of an old building collapsed during demolition in Otolo-Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State. The victim was identified as Bakeru Iwal. According to information gathered by Premium Times, Iwal was inside the building when a section of the structure gave way and trapped him.

He was among workers involved in the demolition. The Anambra State Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement on Wednesday. Ikenga, a superintendent of police, said officers attached to the Otolo Divisional Headquarters responded after receiving information about the collapse.

The police cordoned off the area and began preliminary investigations. Ikenga said the initial findings indicated that the building was being demolished when a section suddenly collapsed, trapping one of the workers. The victim was evacuated to a mortuary for preservation, pending an autopsy and other examinations.

The statement did not provide details about other workers at the site or say whether anyone else was injured. The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Nnanna Ama, directed that the investigation be conducted professionally and thoroughly. According to the police spokesperson, investigators will examine the circumstances of the collapse and determine whether anyone bears responsibility.
