Abia parties dispute Nwaogu’s membership as she appears on NDC ticket

The All Progressives Congress and Nigeria Democratic Congress are disputing the membership and candidacy of Senator Nkechi Nwaogu ahead of the 2027 election in Abia Central. The NDC says Nwaogu became a member of the party before the May 10 deadline for parties to submit digital membership registers to the Independent National Electoral Commission. It maintains that her candidacy is valid and that she remains on the ballot.
In a statement issued by its publicity secretary, Emeka Luis Okoro, the NDC said Nwaogu did not contest or participate in the APC’s Abia Central senatorial primary. The party called on its supporters to back her in the January 2027 election. The APC’s Abia publicity secretary, Uche Aguoru, rejected that position.
He said Nwaogu remained a bona fide APC member, had purchased the party’s Senate nomination form and participated in its primary on May 18, 2026. According to the APC, Nwaogu scored 12,033 votes and finished as runner-up. The party also said her name appeared in the membership register submitted to INEC on May 10 and that it had no record of her resignation.
Nwaogu rejected the APC’s claims when contacted. She said she had resigned from the party in early May through her ward and had joined the NDC. She also said she did not participate in the APC primary.
INEC’s final published senatorial list names Nwaogu as the NDC candidate and Atuma Emeka as the APC candidate.
