The Abia State Police Command says it has dismantled suspected criminal camps in forests around Umuaku and Nneato in Isuochi after an intelligence-led operation. The operation took place on Saturday and involved officers from the Violent Crime Response Unit, Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Anti-Cultism Unit, Intelligence Response Unit, Rapid Response Squad and Isuochi Divisional Police Station. According to a statement issued through police spokesperson Maureen Chinaka, officers were deployed to search the suspected camps.
The occupants reportedly fled after seeing the security personnel. Police said 28 human skulls and bones, suspected to belong to kidnapping victims, were recovered from the locations. The statement did not identify any victims or provide further details about the origin of the remains.
The Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, said an investigation was continuing and that efforts had been intensified to arrest the suspects who escaped. Afolabi appealed to residents to provide information about suspicious activity and support the police investigation. He said the command would continue operations intended to prevent criminal groups from using parts of Abia as hideouts.
