Nigeria Democratic Congress chieftain Aisha Yesufu has said children and young people need politics that delivers effective governance, protects their safety and secures their future. Speaking on a Channels Television Independence Day programme, she said she was bringing her advocacy work into politics.

Nigeria Democratic Congress chieftain Aisha Yesufu has called for politics that delivers good governance, protects Nigerian children and young people, and secures their future. She made the remarks on Thursday during Channels Television’s Independence Day programme, “Generation Next: Youth, Power & The Future We Must Build”. The event focused on governance, young people and the country’s future.

Yesufu said children and youths needed to feel safe and have confidence that their future was protected. She linked those outcomes to the quality of politics and governance in Nigeria. The activist, who joined politics after becoming known for her advocacy, said her political involvement did not represent an abandonment of her earlier work.

“A lot of people look at it and say, have you left advocacy for politics? No, I’m not leaving advocacy for politics, I am taking advocacy into politics,” she said. Yesufu said the political space should be used to pursue the concerns she had previously raised through advocacy.

She identified good governance, safety and future opportunities as priorities for Nigerian children and young people. The supplied material does not include details of specific policies she proposed, nor does it record responses from other programme participants or political organisations.
