Amit Shah says criminal cases will be resolved within three years after BNS rollout

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said cases will be disposed of within three years from the filing of an FIR to the Supreme Court once the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita is fully implemented. Speaking in Bhopal, he said the new law was intended to place justice and citizens’ dignity at the centre of India’s criminal system.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Saturday that cases in India would be disposed of within three years from the filing of a first information report to the Supreme Court after the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita is fully implemented. Speaking at a State-level conference of cattle rearers in Bhopal, Mr. Shah said the new criminal law would be fully implemented in about one and a half years.
He said the commitment applied to the entire process, beginning at the FIR stage and extending to the Supreme Court. Mr. Shah, who also heads the Cooperation Ministry, said India’s criminal justice system had previously been associated with delays but had improved.
He described the BNS as a modern framework designed to protect citizens’ dignity. “The basic principle is justice, not punishment,” Mr. Shah said, adding that punishment would be provided when necessary to deter those who committed crimes.
He also said that, after full implementation, India’s criminal justice system would become the most modern in the world. The minister inaugurated an exhibition on the new criminal law before addressing the conference. He linked the gathering to what he described as the potential for a milk revolution in Madhya Pradesh.
Mr. Shah also criticised the Congress, saying it had not created a separate ministry for cooperatives during the 75 years after Independence despite demands from people associated with agriculture, rural development and cooperatives. He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government established the Cooperation Ministry.
He said cattle rearers would benefit most from the ministry and attributed an increase in India’s milk production to work undertaken under Mr. Modi. Mr.
Shah said production had risen from 14.7 crore tonnes in 2014-15 to 25 crore tonnes in 10 years. He also said efforts were being made to improve cattle breeds through modern technology and prevent disease. The supplied material contains Mr.
Shah’s projections and claims but no independent assessment of the proposed three-year timeline.
