APC attacks Amaechi as drug seizures and campaign plans dominate Nigeria roundup

The APC has criticised ADC vice-presidential candidate Rotimi Amaechi over comments about his late mother’s medical costs. Separately, the NDLEA reported drug interceptions worth more than N5 billion, while the APC announced a women’s mobilisation event and the NSCDC warned against misinformation linked to insecurity.
The All Progressives Congress has criticised Rotimi Amaechi, the African Democratic Congress vice-presidential candidate, after he said he had been unable to afford medication for his late mother, according to a statement reported in Punch’s evening roundup. APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka said Amaechi had benefited from public office for decades but had become financially dependent after leaving office. The party also accused the former Rivers State governor of seeking the vice-presidential ticket in 2027 to maintain what it described as reliance on public funds.
The APC said the presidency was not a “soup kitchen”, using the phrase in its criticism of Amaechi. The source material does not include a response from Amaechi to the party’s statement. In a separate development, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency said it had intercepted container consignments of Loud, a strong cannabis strain, and codeine-based syrup worth more than N5 billion.
The interceptions were made at the Apapa, Tin Can Island and Onne seaports after months of intelligence work and shipment tracking, NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi said. At Apapa, officers reportedly found 161 parcels of Thai Loud weighing 124 kilogrammes and valued at N372 million. The parcels were concealed in two refrigerators and two cartons, according to the agency.
The APC is also preparing a women’s mobilisation and empowerment event in Abuja on Monday. First Lady Oluremi Tinubu is expected to lead the gathering, which organisers say could attract more than 20,000 women and forms part of the party’s grassroots campaign ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Meanwhile, NSCDC Federal Capital Territory Commandant Olusola Odumosu warned against spreading unverified information and fake videos.
He said misinformation could create panic, worsen insecurity and encourage crimes including banditry and kidnapping, according to the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations statement cited by Punch.
