APC chairman says cash-transfer beneficiaries lack platforms to speak publicly

The chairman of Nigeria’s All Progressives Congress, Nentawe Yilwatda, says more than 10 million vulnerable Nigerians benefited from a N75,000 conditional cash-transfer programme, while many of those recipients lack the means to discuss the support publicly. Yilwatda made the comments on Saturday while speaking to journalists after a three-day retreat of the party’s National Executive Council in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. He said beneficiaries were reached through the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction.
According to the APC chairman, many of the recipients do not own mobile phones, use social media or have access to television. He said this meant they could not easily challenge or discuss public claims about government programmes in the same way as more connected Nigerians. Yilwatda presented the transfers as part of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s humanitarian response, funded from gains associated with the removal of the fuel subsidy.
He also cited road construction and student loans among the administration’s projects and initiatives. The APC leader said the retreat had reviewed the party’s affairs at national, state, local-government, ward and polling-unit levels. He said the National Executive Council concluded that the party was strong and prepared for the 2027 general election.
Yilwatda said the NEC passed a vote of confidence in Tinubu, Vice-President Kashim Shettima and other APC candidates elected during the party’s primary process for the 2027 elections. He also said the party would continue reconciliation efforts and urged state chapters to establish reconciliation committees where necessary. The party, he added, would lead its campaign and promote the president’s work across the country.
The NEC also expressed condolences to Niger State over the deaths of 37 miners and called on Nigerians to support Tinubu’s return for a second term in 2027.
