Assam Police have registered a case after a woman was allegedly assaulted and partially stripped by nightclub bouncers in Guwahati, senior officers said. The action followed the circulation of a video on social media showing an incident outside a club in the Khanapara area early on October 2. Police said the case was registered suo motu on Friday night and that an investigation was under way.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Tabu Ram Pegu told PTI that the incident was reported to have occurred at about 1.30am or 2am. Police have collected CCTV footage and other information and questioned people involved in managing the club, he said. No arrests had been made when the police gave the update.
The identity of the woman had not been established, and she had not come forward to file a complaint. Police Commissioner Partha Sarathi Mahanta said officers were checking the details shown in the video. The footage, which PTI said it could not independently authenticate, appeared to show a woman being beaten while lying on the floor of a building’s parking area.
Another woman was later seen coming to her assistance. A security guard at the building told the news agency that the woman had allegedly struck a female bouncer with a beer bottle inside the club. He claimed that other bouncers then took her downstairs and assaulted her.
The police have not announced findings on that account or confirmed the circumstances shown in the video. Officers said further details would be shared as the investigation progresses.
