Assam regional party challenges qualifications of 13 BJP civic candidates

The Assam Jatiya Parishad has questioned the educational credentials declared by 13 BJP candidates contesting Silchar Municipal Corporation elections. Leader Kunki Chowdhury said complaints had been filed with election authorities, while citing alleged discrepancies involving university dates, qualification gaps and institutions facing accusations of issuing false degrees.
The Assam Jatiya Parishad has challenged the educational qualifications declared by 13 BJP candidates contesting elections to the Silchar Municipal Corporation, alleging that their affidavits contain questionable details. AJP leader Kunki Chowdhury said her party had filed complaints with the State Election Commission and district poll authorities. She claimed that no necessary action had been taken on the complaints before the October 3 election.
Chowdhury cited the affidavit of Kanchan Deb, the BJP candidate for Ward 6, which stated that he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Sikkim International University in 2018. She said information available to the party indicated that the university was established in 2021. She also questioned the record of Uttam Kumar Gowala, the BJP candidate for Ward 39.
According to Chowdhury, his affidavit stated that he passed Class 10 in 1999 and Class 12 in 2024. She said the party had sought an explanation for the gap between the two qualifications. The AJP leader further raised questions about Pratiksha Deb and Paplee Karmakar, the BJP candidates for Wards 14 and 15.
She said both had obtained degrees from a university in Jodhpur, and referred to media reports alleging that the institution had issued fake degrees. The source material does not provide a response from the BJP or the election authorities to the allegations. It also does not establish that any of the candidates’ qualifications are invalid.
A separate legal challenge concerns Ataur Rahman Laskar, the BJP candidate for Ward 17. A Silchar court has issued him a summons after three people questioned his educational claims. His affidavit said he had obtained a BA from a university in Sikkim that has been described as controversial.
The election is the first civic poll since Silchar was upgraded from a municipal board to a municipal corporation in September 2025. The corporation has 42 wards. BJP candidates have already won two wards uncontested, while an independent is the only rival to the BJP nominee in Ward 18 after the Congress candidate joined the BJP.
