The Bharatiya Janata Party has intensified its campaign for sitting MLC S.V. Sankanur in the Karnataka West Graduates’ constituency, holding meetings in Hubballi before the candidate filed his nomination papers. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi addressed meetings at the KLE Auditorium and Rotary School in Adarsh Nagar on Saturday.
He asked graduate voters to support Sankanur and highlighted the BJP’s stated focus on education, employment, opportunities for young people and constituency development. Joshi also referred to development under the BJP-led government at the Centre and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. He called on voters to cast their first-preference vote for Sankanur.
Sudhindra Deshpande, who had earlier sought the BJP ticket, attended the meetings after the party directed him to do so and expressed support for Sankanur’s candidature. Other participants included Hubballi-Dharwad East MLA Mahesh Tenginakai, MLC Lingaraj Patil and local BJP leaders. The election is scheduled for October 23, with counting on October 27.
Sankanur, who has represented the constituency since 2020, has been re-nominated by the BJP. The Congress has fielded former MLC Mohan Limbikai. The constituency covers Belagavi, Dharwad, Bagalkot, Vijayapura, Gadag and Uttara Kannada districts, although a later description in the supplied material lists Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri and Uttara Kannada.
The election process is due to conclude by October 31. The last date for filing nominations is October 6, followed by scrutiny on October 7. Candidates may withdraw their nominations until October 9.
Four candidates had filed nomination papers by Saturday, including Independent candidate G.H. Imrapur, according to the Returning Officer. The BJP and JD(S) are also seeking to coordinate their campaigns for four Legislative Council constituencies.
