Andhra Pradesh Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh has announced that Kuchipudi dancers from across the State will be offered a performance venue at Anam Kala Kendram in Rajamahendravaram during the 12-day Godavari Pushkarams. The government is also preparing an artistes’ database for identity cards and possible pension benefits.
Kuchipudi dancers from across Andhra Pradesh will be given an opportunity to perform at Anam Kala Kendram in Rajamahendravaram during the 12-day Godavari Pushkarams, Tourism and Culture Minister Kandula Durgesh said on Saturday. The announcement came after the Minister interacted with dancers following a solo performance by Aparna Kovvidi at the venue. Ms.
Aparna, who is being trained by Kuchipudi guru Ajay Srinivas of Rajamahendravaram, was felicitated after her performance. Mr. Durgesh said Kuchipudi would be included in the cultural programmes organised during the Pushkarams.
He said the initiative was intended to promote the classical dance form and attract tourists to the region from across the country. The Minister also announced that the government was preparing a database of Kuchipudi dancers, theatre artistes, folk dancers and other performers in the State. The database is intended to bring eligible artistes within the ambit of social welfare pensions, he said.
Identity cards would be issued to classical dancers, folk artistes and theatre performers, according to Mr. Durgesh. The cards would help eligible artistes access pension benefits in recognition of their role in preserving and promoting traditional arts.
The announcement followed a programme focused on Kuchipudi at Anam Kala Kendram. The source material does not specify the dates of the Pushkarams, the number of performances planned or the criteria for selecting participating artistes.
